Zimbabwe Takes Major Step Toward Stronger Gender Equality Framework

UN Women Zimbabwe has congratulated the Government of Zimbabwe on launching the National Gender Machinery Framework, a move aimed at improving coordination, accountability and institutional commitment to gender equality across the country. The framework sets out clearer structures for how government departments, ministries and partners will work together to advance women’s rights and support gender-responsive policies.

The launch marks a significant shift toward formalizing gender governance. It creates defined roles, reporting systems and monitoring tools to ensure that gender commitments translate into real progress on the ground. Officials noted that stronger institutional systems are key to addressing persistent gaps in access to education, healthcare, economic opportunities and leadership roles for women and girls.

UN Women expressed pride in supporting the initiative, together with the Embassy of Ireland, the European Union Delegation to Zimbabwe, and the Embassy of Switzerland. These partners have invested in Zimbabwe’s ongoing gender programs, capacity-building, and community-based interventions aimed at reducing inequalities.

Representatives at the event highlighted that gender equality cannot advance without stable structures, reliable funding, and shared responsibility between state institutions and civil society. They also encouraged continued work on addressing gender-based violence, improving women’s economic empowerment, and promoting greater participation of women in public decision-making.
