South Africa’s Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Ronald Lamola, met with Canada’s Foreign Minister, Anita Anand, in Oakville to advance bilateral cooperation on trade, governance, and shared international priorities.
The discussion focused on inclusive economic growth, multilateral partnerships, and a commitment to democracy, themes both ministers highlighted in their official posts following the engagement. According to Anand, the meeting reaffirmed the two nations’ intention to “strengthen cooperation and support inclusive development” through practical diplomatic and trade initiatives.

The Oakville talks formed part of South Africa’s broader diplomatic outreach, which includes preparations for global forums such as the G7 Foreign Ministers Meeting and ongoing efforts to enhance collaboration within the Global South.

Both ministers agreed to pursue follow-up actions aimed at aligning positions on key multilateral issues and deepening cooperation in areas such as trade, innovation, and development assistance. The meeting underscored the growing importance of South Africa–Canada relations in promoting equitable global partnerships and strengthening democratic governance.
The Department of International Relations and Cooperation described the meeting as “a step toward expanding South Africa’s footprint in North America,” reinforcing Pretoria’s commitment to building sustainable international partnerships.
