Zimbabwe Marks UN@80 with Renewed Commitment to Multilateralism and Sustainable Development

Harare— Zimbabwe joined the global community this week in commemorating 80 years of the United Nations, reaffirming its commitment to multilateral cooperation, peace, and sustainable development.

Hosted in Harare by UN Zimbabwe, the anniversary celebration brought together senior government officials, diplomatic representatives, and development partners under the theme “Together, We Build the Future We Dream Of.” The event underscored the United Nations’ enduring role as the world’s principal platform for solving collective challenges — from poverty and climate change to peacebuilding and social inclusion.

A Shared Vision for the Future

Speaking at the commemoration, Hon. Amon Murwira, Zimbabwe’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, expressed the country’s gratitude for decades of partnership with the United Nations and reaffirmed its dedication to constructive engagement in the multilateral system.

“The United Nations has been and must remain the principal platform where nations converge to solve collective problems,” Murwira said. “Zimbabwe pledges to remain an active, constructive, and principled partner in that endeavour.”

Murwira’s remarks reflect Zimbabwe’s broader alignment with global goals articulated through the National Development Strategy 1 (NDS1) — a national framework that seeks to achieve inclusive economic growth and sustainable development in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

UN and Zimbabwe: A Longstanding Partnership

Representing the United Nations system in Zimbabwe, Edward Kallon, UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator, paid tribute to the Government of Zimbabwe and its partners for their cooperation and shared vision for progress.

“The United Nations remains committed to leaving no one and no place behind,” Kallon said, highlighting the collaborative spirit between UN agencies, government institutions, and civil society in driving social and economic transformation across the country.

Under Kallon’s leadership, UN Zimbabwe continues to work with national authorities through the Zimbabwe UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (2022–2026) — a strategic roadmap focusing on governance, economic transformation, gender equality, and climate resilience.

80 Years of the United Nations: Global Reflection, Local Impact

The UN@80 milestone, commemorated globally in 2025, serves as both a celebration and a moment of reflection. Since its founding in 1945, the UN has evolved into a global institution encompassing 193 member states and a mandate that extends from maintaining peace and security to promoting human rights and sustainable development.

In Zimbabwe, the UN’s presence has been pivotal in sectors such as public health, education, climate adaptation, and youth empowerment. Agencies such as UNDP, UNICEF, FAO, and UN Women have played visible roles in supporting national reforms, community resilience, and institutional strengthening.

Reaffirming Multilateral Cooperation

The commemoration in Harare symbolized more than a diplomatic milestone; it was an affirmation of partnership, resilience, and shared responsibility. As Zimbabwe continues to navigate socio-economic recovery, the role of multilateral institutions remains essential in building inclusive systems that align local priorities with global aspirations.

“Together, we build the future we dream of,” read the event’s theme — a reminder that cooperation, not isolation, remains the currency of sustainable progress.
