Maputo, Mozambique — Zimbabwean officials, led by Prof. Dr. Amon Murwira, convened in Maputo this week as part of the State Visit of President Dr. Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa and the inauguration of the Zimbabwe–Mozambique Bi-National Commission. The Commission officially opened on November 20, 2025, with a preparatory meeting of senior officials, setting the stage for deeper bilateral collaboration.
On November 21, Prof. Murwira met with his Mozambican counterpart, Hon. Maria Manuela Lucas, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, ahead of the Ministerial meeting scheduled for the same day. Discussions focused on expanding political, economic, and cultural ties between the two nations.

Zimbabwe and Mozambique’s relationship is anchored in shared interests in trade, transport corridors, energy supply, and cross-border investment. Mozambique’s strategic ports and electricity infrastructure are vital for Zimbabwe’s economy, while both countries provide markets and opportunities for private sector growth. The bilateral agenda prioritises sustainable development outcomes, including employment generation, food security, and investment facilitation.

Beyond economic interests, the partnership reinforces cultural connections, regional peace, and stability. Analysts suggest that the Commission could serve as a model for other Southern African Development Community (SADC) member states seeking structured mechanisms for cooperation and mutual development.
The inauguration of the Bi-National Commission represents a deliberate effort by Zimbabwe and Mozambique to formalise engagement at ministerial and sectoral levels, signalling a new era of structured bilateral collaboration with tangible impacts for both nations.
