Ikirezi Celebrates Two Decades of Partnership with Thistle Farms in Rwanda’s Gahara Fields

At the Gahara Field in Rwanda’s Eastern Province, Ikirezi Natural Products marked a milestone of partnership and purpose, celebrating 20 years of collaboration with the U.S.-based social enterprise Thistle Farms. The event, held on 5 November 2025, brought together farmers, community leaders, and development partners to honour a shared vision rooted in sustainability, empowerment, and healing.

Founded in 2005, Ikirezi Natural Products has become a leading producer of essential oils in Rwanda, working with rural cooperatives to cultivate crops such as geranium, patchouli, lemongrass, and eucalyptus. These oils are exported to international markets for use in cosmetics, wellness products, and aromatherapy. The partnership with Thistle Farms — a Nashville-based nonprofit supporting women survivors of trafficking, prostitution, and addiction — has been instrumental in connecting Rwandan farmers to global value chains built on ethical trade and human dignity.

During the celebration, both organizations reflected on two decades of growth that have not only improved livelihoods but also advanced gender equity in agricultural communities. Hundreds of women farmers have benefited from fair wages, training, and access to markets through Ikirezi’s cooperative model. The event also underscored how sustainable agribusiness can drive post-conflict recovery and rural development across Rwanda.

Representatives from Thistle Farms reaffirmed their commitment to expanding this partnership, emphasizing that every product sourced from Ikirezi continues to “light the way” for survivors and smallholder farmers alike — a philosophy central to Thistle Farms’ mission.

The anniversary was more than a commemoration of business success; it was a testament to resilience and community transformation. As Rwanda positions itself as a hub for ethical and sustainable trade in Africa, the Ikirezi–Thistle Farms partnership stands as a living example of what inclusive economic development can achieve.
